How to merge PDF files without uploading them
most "free pdf merger" sites upload your files to their servers to combine them. that is a lot of trust to hand over for tax forms, contracts, medical letters or a job application. merge pdf does the same job inside your browser, so the files never leave your device.
merge pdfs in four steps
- open merge pdf and drop two or more pdf files on the box. you can add more later.
- every page appears as a thumbnail in one grid. drag pages to put them in order, even moving a page from one file between pages of another.
- press the cross on any page you do not want, such as blank backs of scanned pages.
- press merge and download merged.pdf.
the files view lets you move whole documents up and down instead of single pages, and sort files by name puts them in natural order, so file2 comes before file10. on a touch screen, use the arrow buttons instead of dragging.
common jobs
- job applications: cover letter, resume and certificates as one pdf, in the order the employer asked for.
- scanned documents: merge front and back scans, then remove the blank pages.
- receipts and invoices: combine a month of receipts for an expense report, sorted in alphabetical order by file name.
- school work: put assignment pages from different apps into one submission.
on a mac or iphone
on a mac you can also merge in preview by dragging thumbnails between files, but it is easy to drop pages into the wrong document. the browser tool shows everything in one grid. on an iphone, open the site in safari, tap the box and pick files from the files app. there are step-by-step pages for mac and iphone.
after merging
- too big to email? run the merged file through compress pdf.
- pages sideways? fix them with rotate pdf before or after merging.
- need to sign it? sign pdf adds a signature, initials or date.
- need only part of it again later? split pdf takes pages back out.
limits
merge pdf works with pdfs that are not password-protected. if a file asks for a password when you open it, remove the protection with the password first, then merge. very large files (hundreds of pages of scans) depend on your device’s memory; a computer handles more than a phone.
